Patient Care Assistant II-Med/Surg 6W (6a-6p) Full Time

primary and secondary care hospital serving North Harris and Montgomery

counties. Clinical services include cardiovascular services, diagnostic

imaging, women’s services (digital mammography and bone density studies),

neurosciences, pediatric care (Newborn and Level II nurseries) and surgery,

pathology and pulmonary services, and sleep disorders. Clinical affiliations

include The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center’s Radiation Treatment

Center, and Texas Children’s Hospital.

Position Summary:


a variety of routine tasks to support the delivery of safe, effective, cost-efficient

patient care as delegated by the RN. They provide assistance in transporting,

transferring and lifting. They perform cleaning functions in patient care unit

as delegated, and perform selected diagnostic tests.

Position Responsibilities:

  1. Provides directpatient care as delegated by RN staff

  2. Monitors and recordsvital signs

  3. Assists in providingpersonal hygiene and physical care needs

  4. Accurately measures,records, and reports intake and output

  5. Obtains and recordsdaily weight

  6. Performs bloodglucose testing using blood glucose meter

  7. Reports changes inpatient’s status promptly to RN

  8. Performs as patientcare companion when needed

  9. Assists in theadmission, transfer and discharge process

  10. Performs unithousekeeping needs.

  11. Acts as arunner/transporter

  12. Acts as receptionistfor unit; has limited use of the hospital information systems according tohospital policy dependent on the need of unit

  13. Checks and documentsrefrigerator temperatures as delegated, reporting variances to appropriatepersonnel

  14. Updates assigned bedstatus

  15. Answers call lightsand telephone

  16. Keeps patientenvironment clean, Performs comfort rounds, keeps hallways clear ofobstruction, reports safety issues and broken equipment appropriately, andadheres to patient safety precautions

  17. Communicates withpatient’s family, physicians, and unit personnel and peers in an accurate,courteous, and professional manner

  18. Performs sterileprocedures including urinary catheterizations as delegated by a RN

  19. Performs phlebotomyand 12 lead EKGs as permitted on the assigned unit

  20. Removes saline locks



High School Diploma/GED Required

Basic Life Support (BLS) required

Minimum Experience:


(1) year direct patient care experience

Minimum Knowledge,Skills, and Abilities:


written/oral communication skills


of PCA II orientation/training

Scheduled Hours per 2-week Pay Period 72
