Position Summary:

Accurately analyzes and reports all laboratory tests ordered by the Medical Staff in a timely and efficient manner to aid in the diagnosis and treatment of patients.Maintains patient safety through attention to detail, equipment safety checks, adherence to department policies, and with effective communication with physicians, staff and patients.Displays professional, safe conduct in all interactions. Maintains positive working relationships with staff, other departments, physicians and peers. Displays conduct in support of CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial Mission & Vision.

Position Responsibilities:

  11. Performs, analyzes and documents quality control testing according to established protocol.

  12. Performs and results test procedures on patient specimens adhering to the Section's Standard Operating Procedures to ensure accurate, timely reporting.

  13. Enters or verifies patient results in computer accurately; observes and takes action on computer flags; i.e.: delta checks. Abnormal tests results in need of review are brought to the attention of the Lead Technologist and/or Pathologist.

  14. Performs required Quality Control procedures and maintains records to ensure tests are being performed within control limits.

  15. Recognizes errors and/or improbable results (delta checks) and takes appropriate action; correlates present result with previous result prior to releasing report.

  16. Proficiency test results within the 80% threshold.

  17. Performs daily and periodic preventative maintenance according to established schedule and on an A-1.

  18. Ensures equipment is operational by performing required maintenance, calibration and troubleshooting procedures.

  19. Participates in and promotes opportunities for continuing education and/or teaching, training according to the Section Performance Standards to enhance technical skills.

  20. Takes appropriate action in correcting minor instrument problems using trouble shooting guide. Notifies appropriate leader within established timeframe.

  21. Provides accurate, appropriate and courteous responses to technical questions and results inquiry as requested by physicians and nursing team members.

  22. Communicates professionally and effectively; maintains collaborative positive relationships with patients, physicians, and peers both inside/outside department.

  23. Adheres to established CHI Policies & Guidelines including but not limited to “CHI Values & Ethics at Work”, Privacy & Security, PHI, HIPPA Privacy Rules & confidentiality.

  24. Prints, reviews and complete “Incomplete Worklist” prior to end of shift. Reports any work unable to complete to appropriate personnel.

  25. Completes required ongoing education & competency requirements.

  26. Attends Departmental Staff Meetings as required.

  27. Adheres to safety policies and procedures; maintains safe work habits.

  28. Responsible for inventory of all supplies.

  29. Supports department-based goals and contributes to the success of the organization; serves as preceptor, mentor and resource to less experienced staff.

  30. Establishes/maintains effective and respectful communication in all collaborative relationships.

  31. Rotates weekend/call responsibilities in a professional and accountable fashion if applicable.

  32. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

  33. Accountable for maintaining required certifications.

  34. Ensures service line commitment to life safety, quality and risk management policies, procedures and standards of regulatory agencies.

  35. Ensures requesting physician receives preliminary findings based on diagnostic criteria established for each procedure.

  36. Maintains proficiency in other areas of the department and provides support when needed.

  37. Represents CHI St. Luke’s Health Memorial in physician, community relations and vendors in a professional/accountable manner.

  38. Performs duties in accordance with that of hospital policies and procedures, and regulatory agency guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications:

Education Level

Required:

Associate’s Degree in a Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Chemical, Physical, Biological Science OR

High School Diploma/equivalent &

*minimum of two (2) years’ clinical laboratory experience to qualify for high complexity testing under CLIA regulations.

Licensure/Certification

Required:

None - *For grandfathered employee(s) only who meet the following:

*minimum of two (2) years’ clinical laboratory experience to qualify for high complexity testing under CLIA regulations.

Preferred:

BLS certification (through an approved AHA program)

Knowledge, Skills, andAbilities

*Detail Oriented

*Strong organizational skills

*Ability to communicate effectively with others

*Critical thinking skills

*Testing personnel as a generalist or in a specialized area within the lab.

*Knowledge of QC practices, instrument operation and maintenance, and result reporting.

*Knowledge of proficiency testing standards and practices.

Experience

Required:

None -*Unlessminimum of two (2) years’ clinical laboratory experience to qualify for high complexity testing under CLIA regulationswas accepted in lieu of required Associate’s Degree level education & MLT Certification.
