Cardiovascular Technologist II - Cardiac Cath Lab - PRN


Shift: PRN, Varies

JOB SUMMARY: Provide healthcare services applying x-ray energy to assist in diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular disease. Adheres to and supports with department radiation safety policies. Assists physicians in performing diagnostic angiography and interventional procedures. Responsible for maintaining sterile field and accurately monitoring and reporting patients’ hemodynamic status throughout the procedure. Supports Room Coordinator in various roles related to inventory management, process improvement, accurate patient billing, and continuous quality improvement. Supports additional organizational training needs related to patient safety and process efficiency. Other task as assigned by Room Coordinator or Cath Lab Director.


Patient Assessment

Completes a comprehensive assessment on patients of all ages.

Obtains pertinent medical history from patient by observation or with oral communication.

Performs patient assessment.

Recognizes changes in-patient during course of exam from initial assessment.


Records patient clinical history and patient assessment.

Exercises professional judgement in performance of services and maintains a demeanor complimentary to

medical ethics.

Documents pertinent medical history from patient on radiology request form.

Uses immobilizing devices as required by the patient’s age, condition or the procedure as determined by patient


Using professional judgement:

a) Performs the procedure as ordered.

b) Modifies procedure as required through knowledge gained by patient assessment without compromising

diagnostic or therapeutic outcome.

Maintains credentialing file.


Ensures that communication supports the plan of patient care.

Communicates clearly with patients of all ages, peers and others in order to complete the hospital/physician plan of patient care.

Notifies the patient’s attending physician or Radiologist of any patient issues that affect the plan of patient care as directed within the time frames identified in the Radiology Policy Manual.

a) Or notifies the nurse on the patient’s unit or the physician’s office nurse if the physician is not available.


Provides appropriate patient care during the correct performance of radiologic procedures.

Performs appropriate patient care conditions essential for completion of the procedure for patients of all ages.

Performs radiologic procedures on patients of all ages properly, according to the Radiology Procedure Manual standard of obtaining diagnostic images.

Performs Diagnostic Angiographic/Therapeutic Interventional procedures on patients of all ages properly, according to the Angiographic/Interventional procedure manual standard.

Safely transports wheelchair, stretcher and ambulatory patients as needed.

Documents technical factors on all procedures immediately upon completion of the procedure.

Performs venipuncture under the supervision of a physician on patients of all ages.

Performs clerical tasks to support the patient plan of care.

Assist the Radiologist within the radiographer’s scope of practice as directed by the physician.

Assist with Quality Improvement checks and programs as they relate to the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

Functions as a lead technologist during the absence of the Technical Supervisor.

Demonstrates proper working knowledge of sterile techniques as related to Cardiovascular Interventional Technologist needs.


Provides education for students, patients, self and others appropriate for the age that is being served.

Provides clinical supervision for student Radiographers.

Participates in student clinical competency evaluation by completing:

a) Weekly student evaluations.

b) Evaluates student clinical competency by observing student clinical performance and documenting their competence.

Pursues educational self-development in order to maintain ARRT certification.

Completes mandatory in-services.

Maintains CPR certification according to Health Care Provider course standards by the American Heart Association.

Attends school faculty meetings or monthly department meetings.

Participates in department Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) activities.


Maintains a safe environment for patients, self and others.

Ensure that all radiation safety standards are met for all age groups.

Documents patient pregnancy statements.

a) Notifies attending physician immediately if patient is pregnant or suspects pregnancy before performing the procedure.

Modifies the procedure for pregnant patients as directed by physician using the Radiology Safety Manual Guidelines to include the use of:

a) Lead shielding.

b) Performing different or fewer images that still support the patient plan of care.

Avoid any mechanical, biological, radiation or electrical hazard and report potential hazards immediately.



Education: Education: Registered allied health professional in radiology, cardiovascular technology or has passed an advanced Cardiovascular Registry through either ARRT or CCI (RCIS)

Experience: At least (2) year experience as a cardiovascular Technologist in cath lab setting

Physical Requirements: This job requires, at various times, the following physical activities; climbing, balancing, stopping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, carrying, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, feeling, talking, and hearing, sometimes exerting in excess of 20-100 pounds of force. The worker is required to have close visual acuity to perform daily activities. May be subject to inside environmental conditions, hazards (including electrical currents and exposure to high heat and chemicals), infectious diseases, and may be required to function around prisoners and mental patients.

Skills: Able to use complex imaging equipment and computers. Demonstrates good interpersonal skills and readily adapts to changing events in the radiographic environment.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS: Technical Supervisor, Department Manager, Department Director
