  • JOB SUMMARY

  • Under direction of the charge nurse and/or teamleader, collaborates with co-workers on a daily basis to help ensureuniform standards of care and is responsible for performing duties forassigned nursing unit. Demonstrates competency in the care and/or serviceto our patients/customers. Performs and prioritizes assigned dutiesand procedures in accordance with established methods and techniques as definedby policy. Responsible for performing clerical duties and maintainingcustomer records for assigned nursing unit.

Preferred: Â Currently enrolled in RN, EMT or other medically related program/school

  • Required : Must pass hospitalmedical terminology exam prior to completion of orientation.Experience working with computers to include data and numeric entry

  1. Answers and responds to calllights and phones promptly.

  2. Exhibits proper customer serviceskills with all customers, families and co-workers. Strives toexemplify the St. Joseph Difference in all aspects of work.

  3. Observes and reports changesin patient status to appropriate nurse.

  4. Promptly responds to patientneeds in a courteous manner.

  5. Notifies the physician,correctly enters physician and ancillary department consults intoMeditech and consult log.

  6. Reports to oncoming tech andcharge nurse at beginning and end of shift.

  7. Establishes effectiveworking relationships by communicating clearly and effectively withcustomers, physicians, hospital departments and co-workers.

  • Performs/ProvidesPatient Care as Delegated by the Nurse
  1. Gives basic bedside nursingcare (e.g., baths, linen change, oral care, back rubs, toileting andrepositioning patients).

  2. Assists patients withambulation and transfer to/from wheelchair, stretcher and/or bed, usingproper body mechanics. Transports patients to rooms, other departmentsand vehicles.

  3. Reapplies and removesrestraints as directed by the nurse.

  4. Sets up room for newadmission and assists with orientation of room, equipment and supplies.

  5. Performs accuchecksincluding quality control checks.

  6. Obtains and transportsspecimens to the lab. Obtains blood from the lab when necessary.

  7. Verifies diet list and traysfor accuracy before passing out meal trays. Feeds/assistspatients with meals.

  8. Obtains VS, daily patientweights and I&Os.

  9. Encourages patient touse Incentive Spirometer.

  • Documentation
  1. Documents patient carecorrectly in Meditech.

  2. Assembles charts for newadmissions. Places ID label on all pages of medical record. Obtains oldcharts from Medical Records. Copies charts for patient transfers.Ensures chart has adequate supply of forms.

  3. Enters and transcribesphysician orders correctly in Meditech and Kardex, correcting attendingMD and adding consulting MD as requested.

  4. Performs patient dischargein Meditech, using appropriate disposition code.

  5. Scans physician orders tothe pharmacy.

  6. Enters work orders intoMeditech and/or PHIL.

  7. Assists with obtainingphysician signatures for telephone and verbal orders.

  • Learningand Development
  1. Orients new personnel asassigned.

  2. Attends a minimum of sixunit meetings per year, assuming responsibility for understanding andacknowledging minutes of unit meetings missed. Attends all requiredinservices and completes annual competencies.

  3. Willingly completes othertasks when assigned.

  • Environmentand Patient Safety
  1. Maintains patient and workenvironment to maximize safe/clean working space. Reports allhazards to the charge nurse.

  2. Adheres to properprecautions, techniques and safety according to Infection Controlpolicies.

  3. Works with, cleans up anddisposes of body fluids, blood and secretions appropriately.

  • Supplies
  1. Demonstrates stewardship ofequipment and supplies by using them appropriately, including useof PAR Excellence system.

  2. Maintains adequate supplyof items in patient rooms and unit.

  • OTHER
  1. Performs other duties asassigned to meet the organization`s needs.
